NIDO Worldwide Appeals For More Professionals For NIDCOM…Nominates Representatives For Continental Regions



Nigerians in the Diaspora (NIDO) worldwide has called on the Federal Government to ensure that enough professionals from the Diaspora human resource pool are additionally appointed to management of the Nigeria Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).

In a communique on the NIDCOM status and made available to www.samurahh.com the body also made two nominations each to represent the respective continental regions as it sincerely expressed its profound appreciation to President Mohamadu Buhari, for kicking-starting the implementation of the NIDCOM Act by recently nominating the Chairman and the Secretary of the NIDCOM subject to Senate approval as stipulated in the NIDCOM Act.

NIDO worldwide also extends its appreciation to the 8th National Assembly (NASS) under the leadership of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki (Senate President) and Honorable Dogara Yakubu (Speaker of the House of Representatives), on the passage of the Nigeria Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Bill, in March 30, 2017. 

It was a promise made and kept. In addition, the body specially recognized the tremendous groundwork done by Senator Rose Oko (Chairperson of the Senate Committee for Diaspora and Civil Societies and Honourable Rita Orji (Chairperson of the House Committee for Diaspora and Foreign Affairs) and all members of NASS both past and present for championing the passage of the bill.

NIDO Worldwide Communique on the NIDCOM Status


Recall that the NIDO worldwide Leadership commended the 8th National Assembly (NASS) under the leadership of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki (Senate President) and Honorable Dogara Yakubu (Speaker of the House of Representatives), on the passage of the Nigeria Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Bill, in March 30, 2017. 

It was a promise made and kept. We specially recognized the tremendous groundwork done by Senator Rose Oko (Chairperson of the Senate Committee for Diaspora and Civil Societies and Honourable Rita Orji (Chairperson of the House Committee for Diaspora and Foreign Affairs), and indeed also all members of NASS both past and present for championing the passage of the bill.

Recall further that on Thursday 06 July 2017, in our appreciation letter to the Presidency, we expressed profound gratitude to His Excellency Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, then the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for graciously assenting to Nigerians in Diaspora Commission Establishment Bill 2017.

We want to therefore sincerely express our profound appreciation to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Gen. Mohamadu Buhari, for kicking-starting the implementation of the NIDCOM Act, by recently nominating the Chairman and the Secretary of the NIDCOM, subject to Senate approval as stipulated in the NIDCOM Act.

With this move by the Presidency, we are of high expectations that the Diaspora Commission will fully take off in the first quarter of 2019. The Nigerians In Diaspora Organization (NIDO), which is respectively constituted at continental levels of NIDO Americas, NIDO Europe, NIDO Asia, NIDO Africa and NIDO Oceania, as the official organization facilitated by the Federal Government of Nigeria to represent the interests of all Nigerians in the Diaspora after its statutory NIDO Worldwide Governing Council meeting held on 08.12. 2018 resolved as follows:

1. That NIDO Worldwide appreciates the recognition being accorded to the Nigerian Diaspora by the Federal Government of Nigeria as a demographic block with the professional and numerical strength to contribute significantly to the socio-economic, industrial and technological development of Nigeria.

2. The contribution of the Diaspora to their homeland development is a well-known story
 all over the world - the Indian and Chinese Diaspora experience, are two recent examples of how the Diaspora, if properly organized, can contribute immensely to the rapid development of their home land. Nigeria cannot be an exception.

3. In particular, NIDO Worldwide notes and appreciates the special role that the NIDCOM Act assigns the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO), as constituted at continental level of NIDO Americas (South & North), NIDO Europe, NIDO Asia, NIDO Africa and NIDO Oceania, respectively.

4. Accordingly, as stipulated in Section § (2), (1C), (vi) of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (Establishment) Act, 2017, the respective NIDO continental bodies have through internal democracy and mechanism made two nominations each to represent the respective continental regions. 

The nominations have been forwarded to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, via the Permanent Secretary, political, office of the SGF. A copy has also been sent to NASS via Chairmen of Diaspora Affairs, Senate and House respectively. The nominations are:

5. NIDO Worldwide Governing Council also calls on the Federal Government to ensure that enough professionals from the Diaspora human resource pool are additionally appointed to management of NIDCOM in addition to the two board nominations as stimulated in the bill, to make it a truly Diaspora Commission.

6. Again, our warm appreciation to the Presidency, the 8th NASS and all the Legislators past and present. We thank also the leadership of the respective NIDO continental bodies, all Nigerians stakeholders, institutions and individual that worked for the establishment of Diaspora Commission in fulfilment of the yearnings of over 22 million Nigerians in Diaspora.

7. NIDO Worldwide leadership will continue to work with the legislature, the judiciary and the executive arms of the Federal Government of Nigeria, and indeed, the Nigerian society in general, for the National development of our great country. Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
